KILMAINHAM GAOL VISITOR CENTRE

PJ Hegarty is proud to have been involved in the renovation and construction of the visitor facilities at Kilmainham Gaol, which was completed in time for the 1916 Centenary. Kilmainham Gaol is one of Ireland’s most popular and important heritage attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Work carried out includes the renovation of the adjacent 19th century courthouse, which was adapted to provide ancillary curatorial, exhibition and research facilities. In addition, a pedestrian plaza was created in front of the gaol with improved link access to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA HEADQUARTERS

An Garda Síochána Headquarters in Phoenix Park is one of Ireland’s most famous public buildings, built in 1842 for the new Constabulary, and first occupied by the new An Garda Síochána in 1923. PJ Hegarty won the contract for the restoration, conversion and extension of the facility, while Garda operations remained unaffected. The works consisted of refurbishing and converting the listed building J Block into a new control centre, and refurbishment and extension to the existing gate lodge, which is also a listed building.

One of the country’s most unique workplaces, St George’s Church in Dublin’s north inner city was refurbished and converted into an office building, with PJ Hegarty leading the project to bring it into a new era. Built between 1802 and 1814, The church is one of Dublin’s most admired buildings, and considered to be one of the finest works of celebrated 18th century architect Francis Johnston.

In another example of PJ Hegarty’s expertise in refurbishment of much-loved public buildings, we converted and restored the former Irish Army equestrian school at Collins Barracks in Dublin into an extension of the National Museum.

The Office of Public Works commissioned PJ Hegarty to restore a range of glass houses at Áras an Uachtaráin known as The Peach House. The decorative wrought iron structures were built in 1835 by renowned 19th century architect Richard Turner, who also designed the iconic glass houses in Dublin’s Botanic Gardens, Belfast’s Botanic Gardens and Kew Gardens in London. By the mid-2000s The Peach house had fallen into complete disrepair, and iron elements had decayed.

GRIFFITH COLLEGE

GRIFFITH COLLEGE

PJ Hegarty was contracted for the construction and complete fit-out of two student accommodation buildings at Griffith College — Ireland's largest independent third level institution. Demolition of a number of old buildings started in August 2003 and both new blocks, totalling 13,800m² and comprising 352 bedrooms and 603 bed spaces, were completed by March 2005. The accommodation blocks were designed to be architecturally sympathetic to the original buildings on campus, while construction of an underground car park provided more than 150 parking spaces.

PJ Hegarty used precast concrete panels with bands of natural grey granite in an effort to match the materials and expression of the site’s original building, while delivering an innovative design. The result is a cutting-edge facility that was a European benchmark in bioscience laboratory design at that time. It houses specialist biomedical facilities including dedicated research technology laboratories.

Childers Road Retail Park is the most prominent shopping complex in Limerick, located on the eastern side of the city. The complex is anchored by a leading supermarket chain, and also includes 14 international retail clients, including well-known brands. The retail park also has two fast food restaurants.

ST. JAMES’S HOSPITAL

Leading an extensive project at Ireland’s largest acute service hospitals, PJ Hegarty was tasked with overseeing building works on hospitals 1 and 7 at the Dublin campus. The project in Hospital 1 involved installing a state-of-the-art PET/CT scan facility on the ground floor. Building works included demolition, alterations and fit-out, including the installation of a specialised 25mm thick lead lining system to the PET scan walls and ceilings. The project was completed with minimal disruption — all of Hospital 1’s upper levels were fully functional during the building works.

MARYBOROUGH HOTEL & SPA

PJ Hegarty constructed a modern luxury hotel to incorporate the existing Maryborough House — one of Cork’s most iconic estate mansions, built in the 18th century. Despite the modern conversion to a hotel, Maryborough House has retained many of its classically influenced original features to both the exterior and interior. The four-star hotel was the AA Hotel of the Year for 2014-15.
