The Criminal Courts Complex beside Dublin’s Phoenix Park is one of Ireland’s most renowned civic buildings, which was voted by the public as Ireland’s best new building at the 2010 Irish Architecture Awards. The landmark circular building on Parkgate Street was Ireland’s largest court project for over 200 years, driven by modern technological innovation.

GPO Witness History is one of Ireland’s most popular new museums, incorporated within the GPO on Dublin’s O’Connell Street, the headquarters for the Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Rising. The permanent attraction has won numerous awards including the Micheletti Award at the European Museum Academy Awards (2017) and Best Cultural Experience at the Irish Tourism Industry Awards. The museum was completed as part of the Rising centenary commemorations in 2016.

PJ Hegarty was the principal contractor for the construction of a new and modern 275-berth prison facility in Cork built on a six-acre site adjacent to the old 19th century prison buildings. The two- and three-storey complex is approximately 16,000m2 and includes specialist cells for disabled people, with eight more for segregation and seven high support cells for people with complex needs. The new prison, which also includes an outdoor exercise yard and separate gyms for both inmates and staff, is surrounded by a 7.5m-high perimeter wall.

The fit-out of Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) and Pier E represents one of our most extensive and impressive undertakings, setting a new benchmark for quality, functionality, and design in modern airport infrastructure. This prestigious project involved the delivery of a high-specification fit-out across multiple areas of the terminal, encompassing a wide range of materials, finishes, and bespoke elements.

Since opening in 2010, Terminal 2 (T2) at Dublin Airport has delivered radical improvements in comfort levels — and passenger numbers. More than 100 million passengers have been welcomed to the stunning three-storey curvilinear building, which has been praised widely for its design and quality of the finish. PJ Hegarty took over the project when the terminal building was a shell and core, and we created a modern, user-friendly interior and environment that meets the highest international standards.

The new Headquarters for the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism in Killarney was one of the first decentralised government offices to reach the construction stage in Ireland. The project saw the construction of a four-storey office building on a greenfield site on New Road, comprising 4,300 square metres of offices for the proposed relocation of 140 civil servants as well as a car park with 150 parking spaces.

PJ Hegarty was involved in a prestigious project to design and build a new Central Laboratory for Dublin City Council. The building is an internationally accredited laboratory for biological and veterinary testing, and chemical testing. The project was completed in 15 months, and opened in 2002 in Marrowbone Lane, in the heart of the Liberties area in inner city Dublin 8.

This contract was part of a larger project to refurbish and redesign Dublin’s National Gallery of Ireland on Merrion Square, one of a number of historic buildings in the area including Dáil Éireann, the Natural History Museum, and the National Museum. Our remit was the careful removal and replacement of the existing glass/slate roof and ‘laylight’ glazing that connected two historic wings of the listed building.

PJ Hegarty worked closely with the design team to construct and fit-out this innovative and energy-efficient public office building in Swords, Co Dublin. Fingal County Council wanted the local community to witness democracy at work, so the concepts of ‘openness’ and ‘transparency’ were fundamental. The brief was simple, but the construction process was anything but. The complex design and bespoke materials challenged suppliers and tradesmen to push the limits of their expertise.

PJ Hegarty led this project to create a vibrant, modern and much-needed check-in area capable of handling up to four million passengers a year, which marked the first phase of new development within Dublin Airport. Alongside our partners, we transformed an existing double-height basement storage area within the terminal into Check-In Area 14, adding 25 new check-In desks, a ticket office, and 12 self-service kiosks. The check-in area measures about one quarter of the existing floor area of the terminal and was delivered on time and within budget.
