PJ Hegarty is proud to have been involved in the renovation and construction of the visitor facilities at Kilmainham Gaol, which was completed in time for the 1916 Centenary. Kilmainham Gaol is one of Ireland’s most popular and important heritage attractions, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Work carried out includes the renovation of the adjacent 19th century courthouse, which was adapted to provide ancillary curatorial, exhibition and research facilities. In addition, a pedestrian plaza was created in front of the gaol with improved link access to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Kilmainham Gaol and Kilmainham Courthouse were completely refurbished as part of this project and a number of additional civil and structural works were carried out, including the installation of a passenger lift, platform lift and ambulant disabled stairs. A new concrete ground floor was added to the Courtroom, as well as granite paving / steps and a limecrete floor slab to the Entrance Hall of Courthouse and outbuildings. A steel access bridge was installed at first floor level linking the West Wing and the East Wing with new doors at either end of the bridge. Associated site works included installation of metal railings and fencing, roof lights, paving, ramps and steps in the yard, and new foul and surface water drainage.
