World Earth Day

At PJ Hegarty, sustainability is central to how we operate. On World Earth Day, we’re proud to highlight the steps we’re taking to reduce our environmental impact through our 2030 ESG Roadmap.

We recognise the urgency of the climate crisis and the responsibility to act. That’s why we’ve aligned our carbon reduction goals with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring our efforts are in line with global climate objectives.

As part of our journey to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, we’ve set ambitious targets for 2030:

  • A 47.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
  • A 33.5% reduction in Scope 3 emissions.

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made while looking ahead at all there is to do. Explore our 2030 ESG Roadmap to learn more about how we’re building a more sustainable future.

Building Responsibly: Smarter Water Management for the Future

International days such as World Water Day make us stop and consider our impact on the environment and its natural resources. All organisations will leave their mark; our aim is to be accountable, measuring any impacts we may have and reducing them over time.

With water scarcity becoming an increasing global challenge, industries must play their part in responsible water management. At PJ Hegarty, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and improving water efficiency across our projects. As part of our 2030 ESG roadmap, our aim is to reduce potable water usage intensity by 50% by 2030. We’re improving water efficiency through more innovative management and sustainable construction.

World Quality Week Roundup

For World Quality Week, our campaign highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards across everything we do. Quality isn’t just a focus for one week; it’s a daily commitment we uphold to ensure excellence in each of our projects.

This year, our campaign ingrained quality in our operations through the following:
🔹 Quality-focused presentations on specific topics, highlighting best practices and innovation.
🔹 Recognising excellence through our Quality Awards, celebrating those who consistently go above and beyond.
🔹 Quality toolbox talks on site, ensuring everyone in our workforce understands their role in upholding quality.
🔹 Engaging our teams at every level to foster a culture where quality is at the heart of everything we do.

Responsible Sourcing Supply Chain Workshop

As part of PJ Hegarty’s responsible sourcing of materials workstream, we completed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) workshops. These workshops, an important part of our sustainability strategy, involved several key sub-contractors and vendors.

With 90% of PJ Hegarty’s carbon footprint attributed to purchased goods and services, the workshop was an important step in our mission to reduce our Scope 3 emissions.

The workshop was insightful, with our sustainability team sharing their ESG learning from the past years. Training and awareness on ESG and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) were completed. The team also communicated the support PJ Hegarty needs from our supply chain to assist us in achieving our ESG targets over the coming years. Key topics covered were:
• Climate Change: Carbon Footprint and Target Setting
• Products: Sourcing of Materials and EPDs
• Social: Human Rights and Social Responsibility

Men’s Shed Bug Hotel Initiative

As part of our ESG 2024 initiatives to support biodiversity and the local community, we partnered with Ballinora Men’s Shed to create bug hotels for our projects across the Southern Region. These bug hotels provide a safe resting place for insects during their travels, especially during winter, thereby supporting the pollination cycle and biodiversity.

We were delighted to donate to the Ballinora Men’s Shed, a community-based project where men come together to learn, share skills, and make long-lasting friendships.

The UV Index

Our EHS and site team from West Pharma collaborated with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) to deliver a strong message on sun protection for all outdoor workers and employers this summer. The HSA is urging employers and employees nationwide to take proactive measures to protect themselves from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Employees are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their sun safety by:

  • Wearing protective gear
  • Using sunscreen
  • Seeking shade
  • Staying hydrated

Biodiversity Webinar

To kick off National Biodiversity Week 2024, we held a webinar hosted by Professor Jane Stout, Vice President for Biodiversity and Climate Action at Trinity College Dublin.

During the webinar, Professor Stout shared valuable information about biodiversity loss and its drivers, as well as insights on how we can positively impact local and national biodiversity.

National Biodiversity Week is about connecting us with nature, communicating the importance of biodiversity and providing motivation to play our part in protecting it. Learn more at www.biodiversityweek.ie
